SOLIDWORKS PDM | “Enter a valid account for this resource.”

Explaining why you might see the "Enter a valid account for this resource." dialog when creating a local view for PDM.

The first step in creating a PDM local vault view with the View Setup application is to choose or add the name of the PDM Archive Server that houses the vault you wish to attach to. You will get a security box asking you to "Enter a valid account for this resource" if the Windows user you are now logged in as is not listed in "Attach access" on the Archive Server. This Windows authentication login enables the user to connect to the PDM Archive Server, not a SOLIDWORKS PDM vault login.

Note that this one-time authentication aims to enable the View Setup application to proceed to the next step; it does not save the login credentials and does not require re-entry unless the view is deleted and re-added.

Depending on how your environment is set up, the following information will assist you and your IT team determine which Windows credentials to type.

What “resource” is needed, and what account should be used?

In this case, the “resource” is the Archive Server, and a valid account is a Windows User account that has been authorized to “attach” to this Archive Server.

The authorized Windows Users are managed within the SOLIDWORKS PDM Archive Server Configuration utility, which can be found on the PDM Archive Server under Tools > Default Settings, then on the Security tab in the Attach Access section.

Why you will “not” see this login during local view creation

Active Directory

If your company has an Active Directory domain and your IT group has previously added your domain account or a domain group to which you belong to the Archive Server, you are immediately permitted to "Attach" and establish a new vault view. If so, you won't be asked to "Enter a valid account for this resource" because your existing Windows login is already authenticated to create the vault view.

Local Windows Accounts

Suppose your organization is using local Windows accounts. In that case, this automatic authentication won’t take place, so you must provide a Windows login name and password for an account that has been added to the “Attach access” box.

By default, the “BUILTIN\Administrators”, “BUILTIN\Power Users”, and “BUILTIN\Users” groups will always be present here.

If your organization doesn’t use Active Directory or if you are unsure what users or groups have “Attach access,” add the Windows login name and password for the “ANY” or “Everyone” Windows user/group account on the Windows System hosting the Archive Server service.

You may need someone from the IT staff to either enter this login information or create a user account on the server for this purpose. The View Setup application requires this one-time authentication to proceed to the next step; the login credentials are not stored/saved and do not require re-entry (unless the view is deleted and must be entered again).
