How to Stop Duplicate Titles Being Used in 3D Experience

This article explains how to change the settings on the platform to not allow duplicate titles for files.

Although the 3D Experience (3DX) platform offers several benefits over the SOLIDWORKS experience, there are a few features that may require some getting accustomed to. The distinction between File Names and Titles is another example.

Title vs. File Name

3DX handles file names differently from SOLIDWORKS. IN 3DX, the File Name is a unique ID that cannot be duplicated within the tenant of the platform, but it is separate from the Title. The Title can be changed at any time without breaking references. In 3DX, multiple unique parts or assemblies can be opened simultaneously with the same file title because the file names will be distinct.

Although having the flexibility to change the Title whenever you want can be quite beneficial, it may eventually pose issues for your production process. Fortunately, it is possible to stop files with the same Title from being saved to the platform.

Note: Administrative privileges are required to access and change the settings shown below.

Bonus #1: To learn more about the difference between Title and File Name, please take a look at this article.

Bonus #2: The "Auto-name" option at the top can also be enabled or disabled from this menu. This will assign a unique file name to each file created in SOLIDWORKS when it is saved to the platform. Using the file title parameters you selected above, you can change the title to anything you want after it has been saved!
