How Do I Move My Standalone SOLIDWORKS License to a Different Machine?

This brief article will outline the steps required to move your SOLIDWORKS standalone license from one machine to another.

Perhaps you are upgrading to a new computer, or bouncing your single standalone license between your home and work machines. Either way, the process for moving your standalone SOLIDWORKS license remains the same.

1. Deactivation on Active Machine

First, you will want to deactivate your license from the currently active machine. To do this, Launch SOLIDWORKS and navigate to Help > Licenses > Deactivate...

NOTE: This must be performed on the newest version of SOLIDWORKS installed on the machine if there is more than one version installed.

Then you will be met with the product activation screen. Click Select All, and Automatically over the Internet (recommended), and ensure that an email is entered (this is for tracking, not ownership purposes). Click Next.

The deactivation will go through, and the license is now free to be activated on any machine with SOLIDWORKS installed.2-28-2025 4-20-30 PM

2. Activation on Other Machine

Move over to your other machine, and install SOLIDWORKS, if you have not already done so. You can download the installation files here: https://www.solidworks.com/sw/support/downloads.htm2-28-2025 4-25-57 PM

NOTE: Access to the downloads requires an active support subscription. If you have any issues accessing the installation files, submit a ticket here.

Once on the machine with SOLIDWORKS installed, the process is very similar to activate. When launching SOLIDWORKS, it will prompt you to activate if there is not already a license active.

The activation screen is effectively identical to the deactivation screen, and the same steps should be followed as before.

Upon successful activation, you will be greeted by the following screen with your selected products, and the software will launch.

The serial number will be stored in the registry after the first activation, and should not require being entered each time. If you need to change which number is being used by an installation, you can do so by modifying your SOLIDWORKS install.

That is it! Once you are familiar with the process it only takes a few moments and enables you to move your SOLIDWORKS license between machines, or to a new machine altogether.
