How do I prevent duplicate titles on the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform?
This is a quick article introducing a setting that prevents duplicate title names on the 3DExperience Platform.
The 3DEXPERIENCE Platform has 4 different identifiers for each component stored on the Platform. They are as follows:
- Title:
This is the main human-readable identifier on the platform. Title is what you choose to name a given component when you save it, and will be applied to the Physical Product object stored in the cloud server. - File Title:
Essentially the same as Title, though slightly more broadly reaching. The File Title variable will be applied to not only the Physical Product, but also the CAD Family, 3DShape, and Drawing Title. - Name:
This variable is more for the Cloud's use and organization and less for the human trying to interpret it. A Physical Product's Name is assigned by the Cloud itself at the moment of saving, and cannot be changed. By default, Titles are allowed to be duplicated, but Names are not. - File Name:
The File Name is the name given to a component that's been saved to the local cache. If two files are saved to the Cache with the same name, 3DX may save the new one with an additional modifier, as Windows does not like to have two identical file names in the same folder.
The 3DEXPERIENCE Platform can be rather particular about duplicate names in their system. Having duplicates in your component database leads to confusion, complication, and misunderstandings. It's simpler to just avoid that problem entirely, by making it impossible to save a component with a Title that already exists on your Platform. To do this, you will need access to, and Admin permissions on, the Platform where you wish to make this change. Here is how you make that change:
- Open the Compass Menu.
- Navigate to the Platform Management Cockpit.
- Go to the 5th tab within the Platform Management Cockpit, called Content.
- Expand the third widget, Collaborative Spaces Configuration Center, into a Full Screen view.

- Under the Application-Specific Features column on the left, select the CAD Collaboration section in the leftmost column.
- Select SOLIDWORKS.

- Go under the Settings tab.
- Navigate to the "Save" sub-men.
- In the 7th setting down, Check File Title for Uniqueness, click on the corresponding Drop-down and select "Block save".
- Click Apply at the bottom of the page.

With this setting selected, when you next try to save a component to the Platform, it will not allow you to complete the Save process if there is already a component on the Platform with the same name. If, in Step 9, you instead select "Warning at save", Solidworks will throw a warning error when you attempt to save a part with a duplicate title, but will allow you to still go through with the save.
