How Do I Reset My SOLIDWORKS Customizations?

Here we will walk you through a few places to reset various settings in SOLIDWORKS in case you want a fresh start or are encountering any issues and need to roll customizations back.

We have all been there. Perhaps you got carried away moving toolbars around playing with layouts or macros, creating a hotkey for every tool you may ever touch. Then, things start acting up, or you can't find that toolbar you moved. How do you roll back your settings or get your workspace to a default layout? Well keep reading to find out.

To reset your workspace to the default, the easiest and least invasive method is to navigate to View > Workspace > Default, and this will reset the toolbars and other major settings. This is especially helpful to reset quickly, or if you have made customizations and another user needs to use your machine, but cannot find where anything has been moved to.

Roll Back to Default Settings Temporarily With SOLIDWORKS Rx

If you are experiencing issues or misbehavior, it may be more beneficial to do testing by temporarily rolling back your settings and seeing if the issue is resolved, rather than make the actual change and then find out if it fixed it. To do this, you want to launch SOLIDWORKS Rx. You can do this by navigating to the Help menu (the (?) symbol in the top right) and select SOLIDWORKS Rx, and the screen below will appear.

This option will launch SOLIDWORKS with the default settings, including toolbars and system options. If the issue is resolved in this safe mode, it usually indicates one of two things:

  1. A setting you changed from the default is causing the behavior you're experiencing. In this case, you should compare your settings with the default ones and look for any differences.

  2. Your settings might be corrupted. SOLIDWORKS settings are stored in the registry, which can become corrupted for various reasons. If this is the case, you should reset the SOLIDWORKS registry to restore the default settings permanently, or reach out to technical support for assistance.
